Job Description

Médecins Sans Frontières is a private, non-profit international humanitarian organization dedicated to providing medical assistance to populations in crisis, without discrimination and regardless of race, religion, creed or political affiliation. In Malawi, MSF works in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and the local community in integrated HIV/AIDS in Chiradzulu District and Cervical Cancer projects Blantyre districts.

Type of contract : 9 months Fixed term contract

Start date : Immediate

Main purpose of the position

Provide nursing care, treatment and follow-up of patients, according to doctors’ prescriptions, protocols applied within service and universal Infection Prevention Control (IPC) measures (hygiene standards/precautions), in order to ensure the quality and continuity of care for the targeted population.

Main responsibilities

  • Perform a systematic psycho-social assessment of the patients in the MSF cohort.
  • Provide quality HIV counselling and educational services and carry out individual and group counseling sessions and basic psycho educational sessions, to patients, their caregivers/families (when needed), in order to alleviate their psychosocial difficulties within the project scope.
  • Refer patients to other specialists or other institutions for further assistance, when necessary in order to propose the best support available
  • Participate in the creation of material needed for counseling and educational activities and follow it up.
  • Keep files and statistics of daily activities according the project’s Standard Operational Procedures.
  • Participate in team meetings, multi-disciplinary case management meetings and group supervision to share experiences and discuss special cases with other counsellors.
  • Report any problem arising during the day-to-day activities to the supervisor or line manager.
  • Participate actively in trainings, supervisions/intervisions and support the PSAM & PSS in doing sensitization for MSF staff or external partners about mental health /psychosocial activities.
  • Discuss difficulties and problems in counselling with PSS.
  • Deliver HIV Counselling and Education activities to patients and their caretakers attending the Intensive Clinic Days and the Comprehensive Teen Clubs according to the MSF Guidelines for Patient Support, Education and Counselling (PSEC)
  • Screen patients for mental health concerns and adherence barriers and refer patient identified as at risk to the Complex Case Management Team for specialised support.
  • Follow direction from management on data collection and demonstrate flexibility to adapt to new procedures and priorities.
  • Deliver educational health talks and sensitisation at the start of every Intensive Clinic day and Comprehensive Teen Club, and for any group or occasion that the PSAM or PSS requests.
  • Facilitate Group Education sessions during Teen Club, and for any group or occasion that the PSAM or PSAS requests.
  • Mentor and train peers supporting group activities including Teen Club and group support programs.
  • Keep up to date with the latest evidence-based practice in HIV Counselling and Education through training and supervision


Education :

  • Counseling, social work, psychology or other similar degree/diploma.

Experience :

  • 1 year experience essential. Experience with NGO desirable.
