Job Description

Médecins Sans Frontières is a private, non-profit international humanitarian organization dedicated to providing medical assistance to populations in crisis, without discrimination and regardless of race, religion, creed or political affiliation. In Malawi, MSF works in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and the local community in integrated HIV/AIDS project in Chiradzulu District and Cervical Cancer project in Blantyre and Chiradzulu districts.


MSFF is looking for its Blantyre Office / Cervical Cancer Project.






Workplace      :           Blantyre

Type of contract         :           6 Months Fixed term contract with possible extension

Start date        :           ASAP


Main purpose of the position


Perform counselling and/or education sessions to patients, following MSF protocols, guidelines and procedures, in order to improve their psychosocial condition and awareness of the participants.


Main responsibilities


  • Identify the psychosocial, socio-economic and administrative needs for patients and their families
  • Actively promote the availability of counselling services and carry out, individual or in group counselling, basic psycho educational sessions, to patients, their families (when needed), in order to alleviate their psychosocial difficulties within the project scope.
  • Refer patients to other specialists or other institutions for further assistance, when necessary in order to propose the best support available.
  • Participate in the creation of any material needed for counseling activities and look after it.
  • Keep files and statistics of daily activities and participate in team meetings to share experiences and discuss special cases with other counselors, preserving confidentiality.
  • Inform line manager of any kind of problem arising during the day-to-day activities.
  • Take active part in trainings, supervisions/interventions and support the activities manager when necessary in doing sensitization for MSF staff or external partners about mental health and psychosocial issues.
  • Discuss difficulties and problems in counselling with supervisor.





Education: Bachelor’s degree in Psychology/ in Mental Health or other similar degree/ diploma



  • 3 years minimum experience in counselling with desirable experience in oncology;
  • Experience with I-NGO desirable


Language:       English language required. Local language essential

Knowledge:    Essential: Knowledge of Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Internet

Competencies:        Analytical thinking, Communication Skills, Teamwork, Flexibility, Commitment
