Copywriter & Brand Strategist

Job Description

Copywriters are responsible for the linguistic content of adverts. They work across a range of media and formats, interpreting account briefs to compose advertorial content such as slogans, catchphrases, tweets and scripts for tv and/or radio adverts.

Brand strategists work closely with brand managers, marketing specialists, and social media managers to develop methods to enhance a brand’s visibility and market share. This role balances creative, analytical, and strategic thinking. Brand strategists conduct rigorous analysis and market research to understand customer behavior, then use that information to develop marketing strategies that raise brand awareness, drive customer growth, improve a brand’s positioning, and generate revenue. Brand strategists work in both traditional and digital advertising agencies, as well as in company-specific marketing departments.

Job Brief

The advertising sector is notoriously fast-paced and copywriters in this industry need to be unfazed by working creatively to deadlines. There is a considerable amount of contact with media planners and buyers and the in-house production department in order to develop advertising campaigns. In many advertising agencies, copywriters form part of the creative team, working almost directly alongside art directors responsible for the visual content of adverts.


Job Description

  • Interpreting account briefs
  • Researching clients, their competitors and the target audience
  • Producing original, clear and credible ideas/messages/scripts, and presenting these to clients and colleagues
  • Liaising with clients and colleagues, and meeting project teams to consider advertising requirements
  • Updating and amending campaigns according to feedback
  • Writing reports & company profiles
  • Meeting with account executives to discuss the client’s requirements and core message
  • Familiarizing themselves with the product, target audience and competitor activities in the market
  • Brainstorming ideas and concepts for the visual and words with other members of the creative team
  • Presenting initial ideas to the creative director, some of which may be rejected or developed into workable concepts
  • Writing various copy options, which may be presented to the client as a story board (a consecutive series of frames depicting the script and drawings that may be used)
  • Modifying copy until the client is satisfied
  • Overseeing the production phase, booking and liaising with designers, illustrators, printers, photographers and production companies
  • Casting actors and models to appear in adverts
  • Creating and editing original copy that is accurate, well-researched, and meets client/company needs and deadlines.
  • Speaking with internal and external parties to learn about their content needs
  • Conducting research to formulate ideas or support writing.
  • Learning about the target audience for copy.
  • Assisting in other aspects of the creative or research processes to create cohesive, accurate content.
  • Conducting extensive primary and secondary research.
  • Staying up-to-date on consumer research and market trends.
  • Analyzing research, data and trends.
  • Creating competitive reviews and situational analyses.
  • Identifying insights, challenges and opportunities.
  • Developing brand architecture, positioning and strategy.
  • Writing compelling brand stories.
  • Meeting and presenting to clients.
  • Briefing and collaborating with creative teams.
  • Leading ideation and brainstorming sessions.
