Job Description

Lower Shire Cooperative is a secondary membership-based Cooperative of smallholder farmers located in Masenjere, Nsanje District, in the Southern Region of Malawi. The core business of this secondary Cooperative is to provide technical and management services that support production and marketing of Rice by its member farmers.

The Cooperative is implementing an expansion grant from the United States African Development Foundation (USADF) and part of the funds go towards recruitment of staff. The Board of Directors of Lower Shire are seeking to recruit a Cooperative Manager, there is a huge opportunity to grow business within the value chain:

Position: Cooperative Manager (1 Position)

Reporting to the Board, the ideal candidate for the position should be passionate about making a difference, working with smallholder farmers, have the right attitude, ability to adapt to different environment and work with people of different backgrounds and cultures, creative, innovative and flexible

Job Purpose

The Cooperative Manager is expected to provide leadership and vision to the cooperative: his /her key responsibility is in the development of strategic plans; annual and quarterly work plans including M & E framework.

Duties and Responsibilities;

  • Take responsibility for the management and achievement of the plans and targets set forth
  • Ensure that all financial and operational reports are produced within their time frame for submission to the partner and board
  • Recruit, supervise and manage all cooperative staff
  • Oversee the implementation  and  monitoring  of  all  programs activities at the Cooperative to ensure that set targets are achieved or exceeded
  • Assist Cooperative leaders in the planning and implementation of all Cooperative activities
  • Facilitate the solution to problems as they arise in clubs, and market centres in a timely manner
  • Develop and maintain strong links within the Cooperative area of operation through a strong network communication system between Cooperative Offices, action groups and clubs, as well as other stakeholders and coordinate activities where necessary.
  • Carry out financial and operational management reviews at set intervals and address all variances.


  • Diploma in either of the following: Marketing or Agribusiness from a recognized institution. Those with a professional marketing qualification will have an added advantage
  • Work experience of at least 2years as general management and marketing experience in a busy agribusiness company
  • Sales and Marketing experience is a must
  • Excellent Interpersonal Communication skills
  • Willing to work in rural areas
