Job Description

Founded in 1987, AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF) is a global organization providing cutting-edge medicine and advocacy to over 1, 500, 000 people in 43 countries. In Malawi, AHF is working in partnership with the Ministry of Health (MOH) to strengthen access to quality of HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis (TB) and Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI) treatment. AHF Malawi is providing prevention, treatment and retention services in seventeen hard to reach health facilities in Dedza, Lilongwe, Ntcheu and Chikwawa District. In 2021, the program is extending its reach to four additional sites in Nsanje District.

AHF Malawi wishes to recruit highly qualified and experienced persons to fill the following positions in order to achieve its objectives in the country.


Position Title : Clinical Officers

Reports to : Regional Medical Officer

Duty Station (s) : Nsanje District Hospital (1); Kalemba HC in Nsanje district (1)

Overall Responsibilities

To provide comprehensive and integrated clinical care to HIV positive individuals; and strengthen efficiency and effectiveness in the delivery of quality clinical services in AHF supported sites.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Provide clinical care to ART clients as per Ministry of Health protocols and guidelines
  • Determine the need for further patient examinations and laboratory investigations; interpret findings and provide appropriate care to staff basing on the results of the investigations
  • Refer patients with conditions beyond his/her capacity to medical specialist or other practitioners for specialized treatment.
  • Advise patients’ concerning diet, hygiene, methods for prevention of diseases, drug adherence and disclosure, and all elements that are critical for positive living.
  • Support the clinic in establishing effective patient follow up mechanisms, and ways of retaining all patients in care.
  • Assist counselors with disclosure of HIV status to pediatric clients
  • Contribute to clinical growth of the organization and staff by attending clinic case conferences and team meetings. Contribute to professional development of staff under his/her supervision
  • Maintain accurate clinic records, compile and submit weekly, monthly and quarterly reports as per MOH and AHF requirements
  • Work with the clinic in-charge to ensure all supplies required for the smoothing running of the clinic are available at all times.
  • Strengthen partnership between AHF and other partners, including Ministry of Health officials

Education and Experience

  • Diploma in Clinic Medicine with a minimum of 3 – 5 years’ experience in HIV care and treatment
  • Must be trained in pediatric and adult HIV Management. Those trained in Advanced HIV disease management will have an added advantage
  • Demonstrated leadership skills
  • Must have sound knowledge in the basic medical disciplines to allow for accurate diagnosis and
    appropriate management of clinical problems
  • Registered with Medical Council of Malawi

Other Skills & Abilities

  • Must possess computer skills
  • The position requires someone who is conversant with local languages and culture
  • Flexibility and willingness to provide coverage at other AHF supported sites.
