Clinical Officer - Palliative Care

Job Description

Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF) is an international independent medical humanitarian organization working in partnership with the Ministry of Health and other actors in Blantyre and environs on cervical cancer project. MSF-FRANCE is recruiting suitable candidate for the position of:

Post: Clinical Officer : Palliative Care (Based in Blantyre)

General duties

  • Implementing diagnosis, prescription and prevention procedures that fall under the scope of his/her competencies applying medical knowledge, asking appropriate questions to patients and following protocols in force as well as using laboratory services when necessary, in order to ensure a correct implementation of the medical treatments and to refer patients when appropriate,
  • In cases of emergency, carrying out first aid care and treatment according to protocols
  • Recording in the individual patient’s card and registration books, all performed medical activities (drugs prescribed, lab results, vaccination status, epidemiological activity, doses, etc.) keeping data traceability in order to ensure patients treatment continuity.
  • Participating in data collection and reporting when required
  • Knowing and implementing Patient Therapeutic Education (PTE), i.e. keeping contact with all patients, providing them information regarding their health state and responding to their-questions
  • Initiate a comprehensive assessment and regular review of palliative care patients using an integrated and anticipatory approach.
  • Initiate and participate in ongoing advanced care with the patient and primary caregiver.
  • Initiate and participate in the preparation for end of life with the patient and primary caregivers
  • Provide support, advice, education and advocacy for all patients and their primary caregiver
  • Plan and coordinate services (with other disciplines) relating to end of life care with the ,patient and primary caregiver.
  • Anticipate after-hours requirements and ensure preparations are in place for patient and, primary caregiver should the need arise.
  • Ensure that patient care plan meets professional, organizational, legal and ethical requirements at all times.
  • Deliver a high standard of care regardless of patients’ or colleagues’ differing values, beliefs, culture and/or social context.
  • Contribute to excellent multidisciplinary practice and promote respectful and constructive team relationships. 

Contract details – Fixed-term contract with intended renewal Intended starting date: immediate.

Skills & Qualifications
  • Diploma or degree in Clinical Medicine and current membership in Medical Council of Malawi required
  • One-year previous clinical supervision experience required - Two years or more preferred.
  • Previous experience in Public Health, obstetrics, gynecology, and/or infectious diseases-HIV/AIDS/ STDs/TB, general medicine or minor surgery preferred
  • Sensitivity to people living with a life-limiting condition, those who are dying or bereaved.
