Médecins sans Frontières-France is an international, medical, non-governmental humanitarian organisation that assists populations in distress in more than 60 countries around the world. In Malawi, MSF works in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and the local community in integrated HIV/AIDS in Chirazulu District and Cervical Cancer projects Blantyre districts.


Position: Clinical Officer - ANAESTHETIST (1 Position) – based in Limbe


(6 Months: Mid-February – Mid-August 2020) With possible extension of another 6 months


Job Summary

Organize and carry out anesthetic medical activities, according to MSF policies, protocols and universal hygiene standards and in close collaboration with the surgeon and other medical staff, and increase the knowledge and practical skills of the anesthetic staff through on the job training and knowledge transfer in order to ensure the quality of care provided to patients.

Accountabilities

• Carry out pre-operative consultations evaluating the risks of operating in collaboration with the surgeon, providing the patient with appropriate information and deciding the type of anesthetics to be used, in order to ensure the best conditions prior to the surgery. In collaboration with the surgeon ensure written authorization for the operation is obtained from the patient, and preoperative work-up is done when needed (blood exams, X-ray etc.). Carry out all anesthesia related activities during surgery to ensure safe, adequate anesthesia.
• Preparing beforehand the drugs, material, and equipment required.
• Ensuring supply of blood products in collaboration with the hospital-based blood bank
• Administering and maintaining anesthetics following the rules of hygiene and asepsis in force.
• Monitoring patients throughout the intervention.
• Ensure transfer of patients to the recovery room, as well as providing immediate postoperative surveillance in the recovery room, and monitor full recovery of the patient’s consciousness and setting analgesic and postoperative protocol.
• Advise on postoperative care in the wards with the surgeon, including fluid management, monitoring of vital signs, and mobilization, with special focus on patient’s pain relief during the recovering process.
• Implement and supervise hygiene rules, procedures and MSF protocols in OT/recovery, anesthesia material (decontamination, sterilization, storage conditions, etc.) to ensure the safety and protection of patients and staff.
• Carry out (in collaboration with OT staff) all pharmacy related activities (stock control, re-stocking, ordering according to project schedule, inventories, expired drugs etc.), for medication, supplies, and other anaesthetic equipment, doing special follow-up of narcotics and sedatives (register, consumption, empty vials etc.), ensuring enough stock-up.
• Ensure good functioning and maintenance of OT equipment (oxygen extractor, ventilation, equipment, etc)
• Organize the tasks of personnel under his/her responsibility, and participate and carry out other team management activities (recruitment, training, performance evaluation, motivation, internal/external communication, etc.).
• Collaborate with other departments in the project (intervening in support of other services when needed, etc.), as well as close collaboration with MOH personnel involved in the care of gynaecologic cancer patients.
• Ensure proper fulfillment of administrative procedures and documents (fill in of patients files, forms, statistics, data base, etc.), and elaborate regular reporting about results, proceedings and problematic situations and cases, in order to have updated and correct information about the day-to-day activity in the project and support decision-taking.
• Participate in weekly multidisciplinary team meetings and pre-surgical meetings to discuss treatment plan and follow-up on decisions related to anaesthesia/surgery.
• Communicate any problems arising when providing medical care for patients with the gynaecologists involved in the patient care, and work on solutions in close collaboration with the other team members.

Requirements:

• Education Registration/Certification as anaesthetic technologist, BSc in anaesthesia and intensive care desirable.
• Experience Desirable, two years experience as an anesthetic CO. Having worked in MSF or other NGO’s is desirable.
• Languages Mission language essential, local language desirable.
