Job Description

Brief Background to ADMARC

Agricultural Development and Marketing Corporation (ADMARC) is a statutory corporation formed under Chapter 67:03 of the Laws of Malawi, The company is a state-owned Company whose functions fall in two major categories namely commercial and social. Under its commercial function, the Company’s main objectives include but not limited to production, grading, value-addition, packaging, marketing and distribution of agricultural produce across the country and beyond. Under its social function, ADMARC Ltd plays a pivotal role in maize price stabilization for food security as well as other developmental and social roles on behalf of Government.

In recent years, ADMARC Limited has experienced several challenges on account of both Internal and external factors. The challenges include inadequate operational resources and capital investment, late entry onto the agricultural commodity market, unpredictable weather patterns which have in turn affected agricultural production.

In its quest to deal with the challenges, the Government of Malawi intends to reform ADMARC to enhance efficiency in the Company’s operations. Government is therefore inviting applications from suitably qualified and experienced Malawian candidates to fill the vacant position that has arisen at ADMARC Ltd and whose details are highlighted below:

Job Title: Chief Executive Officer

Grade: AL1

Department: General Management

Location: Limbe Head Office

Age Limit: Not more than 55 years of age at the date of being appointed

Terms of Employment: Three (3) years contract, renewable subject to satisfactory performance.

Reporting Responsibility : Chairman of the Board of ADMARC

Job Purpose

Provides guidance and leadership to management and staff to achieve the Company’s vision, mission, objectives in the provision of services and implementation of the Company’s policies and development programmes

Specific responsibilities and duties

  • Undertake day-to-day management, supervision and guidance on the activities of all the Departments of the Company through their respective heads; exercising authority, leadership and ensuring they are motivated to achieve results.
  • Ensure that the Company provides the best possible conditions and terms of services as well as safe and conducive working environment for its employees.
  • Develop, nurture and manage a cadre of local staff that is well trained and developed to plan, implement, operate, maintain and independently manage the development, marketing and delivery of agricultural products to consumers.
  • Formulate appropriate organizational and management structures for assurance of optimal efficiency in serving the Company’s customers and the public.
  • Utilize up-to-date management information system and technology to prepare physical, financial, institutional performance reports, programmes and plans of the Company.
  • Carry out any other relevant ADMARC and/or Ministry’s assignments as requested from time to time.

Requisite knowledge, abilities and skills
  • Good knowledge of Malawi Government’s policies and strategies;
  • Good knowledge of Agricultural marketing policies and strategies;
  • Knowledge of agricultural marketing, logistics, warehouse receipt systems, agricultural insurance;
  • Strong analytical, interpersonal and communication skills;
  • Strong organizational skills, versatility, ability to multi-task and meet deadlines;
  • Should possess leadership, team building, and negotiation skills;
  • Extensive management experience at a senior level and capable of leading and managing a team of technical and professional staff;
  • Computer literate.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Minimum of Masters Degree In either an Agriculture related field, Economics, Business Administration, or Finance
  • Those with a PhD will have an added advantage
  • Minimum of ten years proven managerial experience at increasing level of seniority and responsibility.
  • Be of high, moral and ethical character and integrity;
  • Results oriented and proven capability to work under pressure to meet strict deadlines.
  • Good knowledge of business principles and techniques of administration, organization skills, management and general understanding business in local and regional economies;
  • At least 10 years of work experience with a good track record in the field of commodity marketing;
  • Those with more than 10 years of work experience in agricultural commodity marketing will have an added advantage;
  • Knowledge of strategic and operational planning, economics, marketing and finance.
