ActionAid Malawi is a locally registered non-governmental organisation under the Company’s Act 1984 as a company limited by guarantee and is affiliated to ActionAid International, a federation of national organizations working in over 45 countries in Africa, Asia, America and Europe regions. Position: BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT AND GRANTS MANAGEMENT OFFICER


Reporting to: Communication & Grant Manager (with dotted line to Head of Business Development.

Duration: 3 years renewable dependent on performance and availability of funding

Location: Lilongwe


Role Overview


The role holder shall support the development and implementation of growth strategies in line with ActionAid Malawi Resource Mobilisation strategy to maximise ActionAid’s funding base. The individual will be involved in performing market research, donor intelligence /scoping to identify new opportunities, support the development of business models, coordination of resource mobilisation efforts with a diverse range of funding agencies i.e. ActionAid International affiliates for projects, foundations, and individuals, corporate, bilateral and multilateral donors.

Responsibilities

Business Development

  • Support the development of business development models and opportunities
  • Coordination of resource mobilization efforts
  • Support donor intelligence / scoping and identification of new donors or potential funding opportunities.
  • Support Local Rights Programme, cluster, national teams in developing concept notes and funding proposals.
  • Work jointly with all relevant team including programmes team to influence donor commitment towards development in Malawi.
  • Work with programme staff to establish and manage consortium partnerships with like-minded; civil society organizations and private sector consultancy firms as appropriate to leverage ActionAid’s chances of success in competitive calls for proposals and tender bids.
  • Prepare a report summarizing ActionAid Malawi’s current levels of preparedness to respond to existing opportunities.
  • Perform market research to identify new opportunities and engage with relevant units and stakeholders to establish strategies for pursuing those new opportunities.
  • Support in tracking revenue targets.
  • Provide training and mentoring to members of business development team.
  • Support development and deliver pitches for potential supporters, investors and donors.

Contract Management
  • Provide support on all donor funded projects and manage donor contract in line with ActionAid Malawi policies and procedures.
  • Facilitate inception meetings and workshops of all donor funded projects.
  • Support monitoring and implementation of donor funded projects.
  • Provide support on all donor funded projects and manage donor contracts in line with donor / supporter requirements.
  • Support implementation of ActionAid Malawi cost recovery guidelines adherence on all donor funded projects.
  • Support efficient and timely reporting for all donor funded projects
  • Support knowledge management for ActionAid Malawi concept proposals and programming.
  • Support implementation of internal and audit including reviews.

Staff and Partners Capacity Building
  • Support development and capacity building of staff and partners in fundraising and contract management.
  • Support induction of new staff and partners
  • Arrange field visits for donors, peers and colleagues.

Organization Management Support
  • Provision of fundraising and compliance information for strategy development and implementation.
  • Provision of fundraising and compliance information for annual planning, budgeting and implementation.
  • Monitoring of monthly management accounts
  • Accountable for organizational assets in his / her custody.


Qualifications, Experience and Skills

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business, Marketing, Public Relations or its equivalent.
  • Have at least 3 years post qualification experience in fundraising, business, marketing and communications.
  • Experience working in a multi-cultural environment
  • Thorough understanding of laws and regulations and fundraising environment at local and global level
  • Excellent command of oral and written English and ability to communicate complicated or technical information to range of audiences.
  • A sound understanding of Social Marketing within the not-for-profit sector.
  • High level of IT proficiency in use of MS Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint and e-mail.
