Small and Medium Poultry Farmers Association (SMPFA)


Position: Association Coordinator


SMPFA is a membership organisation and the members are small and medium poultry farmers across Malawi. SMPFA was formed in 2015 and registered in 2018 as a Trust. It represents members who are spread across the country. The association has made significant contributions in lobbying the government for a more favourable policy and regulatory environment through Civil Society Agriculture Network (CISANET), Competition and Fair-Trading Commission (CFTC), Malawi Parliament and the Ministry of Trade.


SMPFA has partnered with Commercial Agriculture for Smallholders and Agribusinesses (CASA), The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office’s (FCDO) Program being implemented by NIRAS Limited, to strengthen its secretariat by providing a training and capacity building support to the association. In the project, SMPFA staff and board members will be trained in managing product aggregation services, coordinating and implementing smallholder farmers (SHFs) training and capacity building, policy lobbying and advocacy activities and setting up and managing demonstration farms. The organisation development activities shall also include corruption mitigation measures such as organisational set up to ensure transparency and accountability. The association intends to employ a coordinator who will report to the association Board Members to set up a functional secretariat.



Ensures policy implementation for the association in order to achieve strategic goals by:

  • Maintaining database of all small medium poultry farmers,
    Managing vendor relationships and building effective supply chain partnerships
  • Preparing and processing requisition purchase orders and invoices for purchases
  • Adhering to all company policy with particular regard to accounting producers


Directs regional and district offices to ensure smooth running of the association by:

  • Providing leadership in donor funded projects
  • Scheduling workload to meet priorities and targets
  • Resolving contractual and commercial issues and disputes
  • Recruiting and mentoring staff.


Reviews poultry marketing policies to ensure a fair marketing field for small and medium poultry farmers by:

  • Engaging other poultry stakeholders in the country
  • Training poultry farmers in best poultry practices
  • Networking with other stakeholders
  • Identifying business improvement opportunities
  • Performs other duties assigned by the Board.



  • Tertiary qualification (Diploma or First Degree) in agriculture, administration, management, or any equivalent qualification from a recognized and accredited institution.
  • At least 2 years’ experience in working in a similar position.
  • Those with knowledge and experience of the livestock sector in Malawi will have an added advantage.
  • Experience in working with farmers in Malawi.
  • Demonstrate ability to coordinate communications between secretariat and Government.
