SMPFA is a membership organisation and the members are small and medium poultry farmers across Malawi. SMPFA was formed in 2015 and registered in 2018 as a Trust. It represents members who are spread across the country. The association has made significant contributions in lobbying the government for a more favourable policy and regulatory environment through Civil Society Agriculture Network (CISANET), Competition and Fair-Trading Commission (CFTC), Malawi Parliament and the Ministry of Trade.
SMPFA has partnered with Commercial Agriculture for Smallholders and Agribusinesses (CASA), The Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office’s (FCDO) Program being implemented by NIRAS Limited, to strengthen its secretariat by providing a training and capacity building support to the association. In the project, SMPFA staff and board members will be trained in managing product aggregation services, coordinating and implementing smallholder farmers (SHFs) training and capacity building, policy lobbying and advocacy activities and setting up and managing demonstration farms. The organisation development activities shall also include corruption mitigation measures such as organisational set up to ensure transparency and accountability. The association intends to employ a coordinator who will report to the association Board Members to set up a functional secretariat.
