Job Description

Position Summary

Reporting to the College Librarian, the Assistant Librarian will assist in the provision of a dynamic information service in support of the teaching, learning, research and outreach activities as well as assist in the organization of knowledge and promote its accessibility. The successful candidate will be offered a full-time established position in line with University of Malawi conditions of service.


Position: Assistant Librarian

Duties and Responsibilities

The duties and responsibilities shall include, but not be limited to the following:

  • Developing soft and hard copy book collections.
  • Managing the paper and electronic journals collection.
  • Providing training in information literacy to faculty, staff and other categories of library users.
  • Working closely with students through the user education program and in ensuring the smooth delivery of all library services.
  • Assist in marketing the library services including management of the Library Website
  • Coordinating activities and development of support staff
  • Cataloguing incoming materials for the OPAC (on line public access catalogue)
  • Development of local databases on topics relevant to the needs of the College
  • Project and proposal development
  • Digitization of local content such as student thesis
  • Represent the Library at appropriate committees


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Library and Information Science or any other related degree.
  • At least one year of relevant experience in an academic institution

Desirable Attributes

  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Interest in and knowledge of ICT
  • Experience in library specific packages such as KOHA, Library Solution and digitization packages
  • Energetic, innovative, team worker.
