Job Description

COMSIP Cooperative Union Limited is a member owned organization with a national footprint. It is a secondary cooperative, registered under the Cooperative Societies Act 1998. COMSIP works with rural and peri-urban community groups that are owned, managed and controlled by members themselves and its main thrust is building a culture of savings and investment among ordinary Malawians in a quest to improve livelihoods.

COMSIP is an implementing agency in the Malawi Social Support for Resilient Livelihoods Project (MSSRLP), a government of Malawi project supported by the World Bank.

With funding from the World Bank through the National Local Government Finance Committee (NLGFC) COMSIP therefore intends to use part of the funding to recruit suitably qualified, experienced, and result oriented project staff for the following posts to be based in Lilongwe and Mzuzu.

Assistant Accountant

The Assistant Accountant shall report to the Financial Accountant.

Main duties and Responsibilities

  • Documents financial transactions by entering account information
  • Recommends financial actions by analysing financial options
  • Summarises current financial status by correcting information; preparing Balance Sheet, Profit and Loss and other reports
  • Verifying documents before processing payments
  • Supervise the work of Accounts Assistant.
  • undertake database backups for Sage accounting sytem.
  • Maintains financial security by following internal controls
  • Prepares special financial reports by collecting, analysing, and summarising account information for donors
  • Assist in Preparation of management accounts
  • Prepares bank reconciliations
  • Assist in the maintenance of fixed asset register.
  • Open and monitor project accounts
  • Timely deposit salary cheques to various staff bank accounts
  • Manage disbursements of cash during workshops, meetings, trainings and field activities
  • Prepare shareholding patronage refunds

Qualifications and Experience Required

  • Minimum Diploma in accounting
  • A Bachelor’s degree in accounting or business administration will an added advantage
  • At least 2 years of accounting experience.
  • Have a high level of written and oral communication skills.
  • Knowledge of Sage accounting package.
  • Member of Institute of Chartered Accounts in Malawi (ICAM)
  • Adequate Knowledge and adherence to Protection from Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (PSEA)
