Job Description


UMODZI Consulting is a Malawian led professional team of consultants with cooperating international partners that provides market-led business development services (BDS) to corporate clients, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Malawi and within the SADC region.

UMODZI Consulting has been working with United States African Development Foundation (USADF) in Malawi since 2019, to support the implementation of the USADF funded enterprises. With funding from USADF, UMODZI Consulting will be implementing a Livelihood Improvement Program in Neno District. The program will set up community owned integrated farming system demonstration units in communities around 14 health facilities that are part of “Partners in Health” (PIN) Package of Essential Noncommunicable Disease Interventions (PEN) Plus network of clinics within Neno District. UMODZI Consulting is inviting applications from suitably qualified persons to fill various positions as follows:

POSITION: Agronomist 

Reports to: Project Coordinator

Purpose of the position

The Agronomist will lead in conduct research and field checks, develop demonstration plots and make observations. He will be key in helping farmers to; develop innovative farming techniques to increase crop quality and yield; manage crop planting and implementing efficient farming practices; improving crop efficiency and sorting any agricultural problems.

Main duties and responsibilities

• Plan, schedule, execute, evaluate, analyze, interpret and report results of demonstration plot activities
• Assist in trial and demo plots establishment, monitoring, weed control, plot maintenance, agronomic and disease notations and harvest, as necessary
• Hold field demonstrations and grower meetings to promote new innovative techniques
• Studying plants and soil in order to develop better planting, cultivation, and harvesting techniques, improve crop yield, and solve problems facing the agriculture activities in the 14 health facilities.
• Researching, developing and promoting farming practices or products that diminish the effects of changes in soil, climate, and weather or prevent damage from pests.
• Visiting fields to collect seed, plant, and soil samples and testing samples for nutritional deficiencies, diseases, or other changes in the groups established in14 health facilities.
• Assisting with the plant selection process and the development of planting and irrigation schedules, budgets, and timelines.
• Conduct farm visits, general crop inspections and technical advice to farmers

Minimum qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Agronomy, Agriculture, or related field.
• Minimum of 5 years’ experience
• Proficiency with computers
