Job Description

Dwangwa Cane Growers Limited (DCGL) operates an agri-based business north of Nkhotakota and is looking for suitable persons to fill the position of Agriculture Manager. The position requires a team player and a person with good people management skills to be able to motivate his/her subordinates to achieve set targets.

Position: Agriculture Manager

Reporting : The position reports to General Manager

Major Responsibilities

• Reporting and Advisory Role
• Advise the General Manager on all agricultural management and related matters
• Prepare activity, progress and achievement reports to the GM on Department’s activities every month
• Provide departmental and regular situational reports that are professionally written and meet information requirements as needed by the company and other stakeholders
• Operational, Planning & Resource Utilization
• Participate in the formulation, implementation and review of DCGL’s strategic plans, sugar cane management standards and operational procedures
• Liaising with Dwangwa Sugar Corporation Ltd on sugarcane harvesting and delivery schedules to the Mill to maximize sucrose yield
• Maintain controls to ensure adherence to regulations, systems and procedures
• Ensure adequate and economic utilization of machinery and equipment
• Supervise extension and farm related services to smallholder sugar cane growers and other clients

Financial Control

• Control labour resources for all activities in the department
• Re-inforce internal controls in the Department’s operations
• Prepare of annual work plans and budgets for the Department

Human Resources

• Identify training needs and develop training programmes for staff and growers
• Carry out daily labour planning through appropriate delegation to ensure effective labour utilization
• Carry out staff performance appraisal and make necessary recommendations for review
• Motivate staff to achieve high performance for attainment of departmental objectives

Stakeholder Relations

• Liaise with Grower representatives on all extension related issues
• Liaise with Government agencies and other stakeholders on agricultural policies and best practices in sugarcane production

Qualifications and Skills

The ideal candidate should have the following qualifications and competencies:

• University Degree in Agriculture plus minimum of 5 years in agriculture management operations
• Sound knowledge and expertise in sugar cane production and marketing
• Must have good public relations, team work and strategic management skills
• Strong communication and excellent interpersonal skills with a strong command of English and Chichewa languages
• Must be comfortable working with rural communities
• Good computer skills in word processing, spreadsheets, internet and email
