Job Description

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates of Malawian Nationality to fill the vacant positions existing in the Competition and Fair Trading Commission (CFTC).

THE ORGANISATION
The Competition and Fair Trading (CFTC) is a statutory corporation established to enforce the Competition and Fair Trading Act (CFTA) Chapter 48:09 of the Laws of Malawi. The objective of the Act is to safeguard and encourage competition and fair trading in Malawi. In this regard, the Commission is responsible for ensuring that businesses are not engaged in anti-competitive trade practices; and regulating and monitoring monopolies and concentration of market power thereby strengthening efficiency of production and distribution of goods and services, securing the best possible conditions for freedom of trade, safeguarding consumer welfare and setting a favourable operating environment for expansion of the country’s entrepreneurship base.


Position: Administrative Assistant (Grade CFT 6)



The Administrative Assistant will serve as a secretary to the Executive Director. He/she will be required to perform secretarial tasks and exercise a high level of discretion and the application of administrative and business management skill.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Providing secretarial services to the Executive Director
  • Assisting the Executive Director in coordinating administrative, financial and personnel activities
  • Maintaining a schedule of engagement for the Executive Director and make necessary preparations for such engagements
  • Preparing correspondence independently or based on brief notes
  • Receiving correspondence brought to the Commission and record them in a register
  • Reviewing office procedures and implements necessary changes
  • Screening telephone calls, handling them personally if possible and gives information based on knowledge of policies, regulations or Executive Director’s viewpoint.


Qualifications and Competencies

Desirable qualifications for the job include:

  • Minimum of Advanced Diploma in Business Administration from a recognized institution
  • Typing speed of 50 words per minute and shorthand 120 words per minute.
  • Minimum of 5 years working experience
  • Knowledge of modern office practices, procedures and equipment
  • Excellent time management skills and ability to multi task and prioritize work.
  • Ability to maintain and keep records; attention to detail and problem solving skills.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional documents, technical procedures and regulations
  • Ability to write reports and routine business correspondence
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers
  • Ability to use Microsoft packages especially word, excel and power-point.
  • Good command of English.


Appointment and Remuneration


The positions are permanent subject to three months’ probation and meeting agreed performance targets. The successful candidates shall be offered an attractive salary and benefits in accordance with the Commission’s Conditions of Service.
