Job Description

A fast-growing ICT service provider, based in Lilongwe is currently recruiting an Accountant who will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the Finance Department, as well as providing valuable decision support to senior management.


The successful candidate will have a good understanding of financial, administrative and procurement policies in Malawi and demonstrate a high degree of integrity, transparency and honesty in all aspects of their conduct.

Key Responsibilities and Tasks

A. Accounting

  • Manage all accounting transactions, including journal entries, accruals and key account reconciliations
  • Handle monthly, quarterly and annual closings and ensure integrity of all balances
  • Tracking and forecasting cash flows and flag any anomalies to senior management
  • Ensure timely and accurate payments to suppliers.
  • Track advances and all financial transactions with employees, contractors and vendors
  • Provide concise and timely financial reports that give senior management a clear picture of financial position.
  • Provide tax planning services with reference to current legislation
  • Ensure annual financial statements are prepared accurately and in good time.
  • Coordinate external audit in consultation with the finance director
  • Ensure payroll is prepared and executed in a timely manner each month.
  • Remit tax deducted from staff salaries and withholding tax from consultants in accordance with the local laws; prepare, as needed, tax returns within statutory deadlines
  • Compute all corporate taxes, prepare and submit tax returns

B. Planning & Analysis

  • Compiling and presenting reports, budgets, business plans, forecasts and commentaries
  • Analyzing business performance Vs plans and identifying variance drivers
  • Monitoring performance of individual business units and analyzing trends
  • Providing senior management with both routine and ad hoc information on key business indicators

C. Controlling

  • Maintain transparent financial and reporting procedures and effective operation of financial controls.
  • Ensure that all financial transactions are made in compliance with corporate policies and procedures
  • Ensure financial data confidentiality and maintain adequate records of financial transactions that meet the requirements of the tax authority and external auditors
  • Promote overall financial awareness by conducting in-house training on controls, compliance and accountability
  • Assist the Finance Director in the preparation & maintenance of effective financial tracking systems

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • At least 3 years’ experience working in a similar accounting position with a verifiable record of integrity
  • Good working knowledge of Malawi tax regulations and procedures
  • Ability to plan & organize work independently in order to meet strict deadlines
  • Ability to analyze and interpret financial data, identify/resolve errors, prepare and defend their reports
  • Fluent in English and Chichewa, both written and spoken; excellent written and oral communication skills

Minimum Qualifications (Required)

  • A qualified accountant (or finalist)
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office
  • Good working knowledge of QuickBooks accounting software is preferable
