Job Description

The Malawi Economic Justice Network is a civil society organization in Malawi whose main objective is promoting participatory economic governance and advocating for the plight of poor people in Malawi. Major work involves analysis and monitoring of the national budget and ensuring that government and donor policies focus on the majority poor and that, citizens get value for money in all government and donor activities. MEJN operates with a secretariat which oversees the corporate strategy, which co-ordinate functions of MEJN’s 27 district chapters in respective regions.

The network is currently receiving applications for some vacancies that has arisen in programmes and its Finance and Administration Department from suitably qualified individuals, as follows:



Position: Accountant


The Accountant is responsible for the smooth operation of all day-to-day accounts activities; the Accountant coordinates with finance Manager in ensuring timely submission of ACCURATE financial reports to the network’s partners, board and management

Duties:

  • Updating and maintaining books of Accounts to final trial balance using Sage Pastel Accounting Package.
  • Prepare individual project donor financial reports in line with specific donor requirements and formats.
  • Updating and maintaining cash books such that networks liquidity levels are monitored daily, weekly and monthly basis.
  • Performing bank, creditors, debtors and general ledger reconciliations.
  • Ensure timely submissions of all programs field liquidations.
  • Maintaining a proper filing system in the Finance department.
  • Participate in the coordination of the annual statutory audit and the network’s financial systems review.
  • Any other duties as assigned by management from time to time.


Required Qualifications Education:

  • Minimum of a Degree/ An advanced Diploma in Accounting, Business Administration, or equivalent.


Experiences:

  • Good knowledge of theoretical and practical principles of finance, accounting and budget.
  • Ability to apply them in concrete situation.
  • Proficiency in using IT (especially, accounting software systems) with minimum supervision.
  • Ability to orient, supervise or train non-finance staff in accounting systems.
  • Self-motivated with ability to work well under pressure.
  • A minimum of two-year’s experience in a busy accounting office (NGO experience will be an added advantage).
  • Knowledge of Accounting packages
  • Be able to take initiative and make suggestions.
  • High level of personal and professional integrity.



Reporting to : Finance Manager

Duration of contract : Two Years (Renewable)
