Organizational Overview

National Organisation of Nurses and Midwives of Malawi (NONM) is an independent, non-partisan, non-governmental union and professional organization representing nurses and midwives of Malawi. Its mission is to promote and maintain members professional interests and socio-economic welfare to effectively contribute to quality healthcare services rendered to the nation.


Summary of the Job

NONM invites applications from interested candidates for the position of Accountant. The contract duration is 12 months with a possibility for extension.

Position: Accountant

Reporting Responsibilities

The Accountant reports to the Executive Directorand provides a range of finance functions to the organization and its projects.

Job Responsibilities

Provides financial information and financial management to management, board and development partners (donors) by researching and analyzing accounting data; and preparing reports.

Job Duties

  • Prepare budgets, perform budget revisions, monitoring\/analysis and ensure budget control
  • Document financial transactions by entering account information
  • Prepare payments by verifying documentation, and requesting disbursements
  • Substantiate financial transactions by auditing documents
  • Record expenditures, income, and any other related transactions, in the financial management system
  • Prepare payment vouchers and corresponding checks
  • Summarize current financial status by collecting information; preparing balance sheet, profit and loss statement
  • Perform monthly, quarterly and annual accounting activities including reconciliations, coordination and completion of quarterly and annual reports and audits for management, board and development partners/donors. This includes: proper and timely reporting of financial and contractual updates; ensuring that books of accounts are up-to-date, orderly, and readily available for reference and audit; and that monthly reports are prepared in accordance with financial management procedures and policies
  • Make recommendations based on financial analysis and reports on request
  • Assess systems and procedures including internal controls, and initiate corrective actions: including: development of administrative, financial, and operations systems necessary to support the attainment of organization strategies, objectives, and plans
  • Maintain accounting controls by preparing and recommending policies and procedures
  • Ensure statutory compliance and prepare tax returns
  • Conduct month-end and year-end close process
  • Guide accounting and administrative staff by coordinating activities and ensure that staff are aware of and comply with approved policies and procedures related to financial accounting and documentation, and procurement of goods and services
  • Secure financial information by completing data backups
  • Maintain financial security by ensuring internal controls
  • Provide on-going financial administration to organisation and adherence to financial controls and approval procedures
  • Ensure implementation of the internal control system and financial procedures manual of the organization
  • Comply with legal and donor requirements by studying existing and new legislation, agreements and guidelines
  • Protect operations by keeping financial information confidential.
  • Contribute to team effort by: liaising with the relevant personnel and committee(s) on personnel administration and human resources management, including payroll; management of property at Secretariat and satellite offices in the zones and districts; compliance to procurement for the organization including pre-qualified suppliers. Also, in liaison with the Administrative Assistant, oversee petty cash management

Skills and Qualifications

  • A Bachelors’ Degree in Accountancy, ACCA and/or CIMA
  • Exceptional financial and analytical skills
  • Advanced knowledge of MS Excel
  • 5+ years accounting experience
  • Age 35 years above
  • Expertise with QuickBooks
  • Extensive knowledge of GAAP and IAS;
  • Excellent organizational, problem-solving and communication skills
  • Attention to Detail
  • Deadline-Oriented.
